We recently we found out that Norton Antivirus was completely blocking our site for some users.
Further investigation revealed that the source of the problem was QuickTime. A researcher discovered a theoretical security issue with QuickTime. As a result, Norton now treats attempts to view QuickTime media as a potential worm intrusion, and shuts down the entire URL.
Without any notice to the user, without any advice on how to solve the problem, and without indicating whether or not there was an actual security risk.
Apple has patched the problem in its latest release of QuickTime. So, in theory, Norton users with the patched version of QuickTime should not have any problem. Unfortunately some CricketCast subscribers have reported that updating QuickTime does not fix the problem, and the only way they have been able to “turn CricketCast back on” is by temporarily disabling Norton Antivirus worm protection, then turning off the QuickTime-specific rules.
Other users have reported success with updating QuickTime.
So, the upshot for now is – at the very least update QuickTime as soon as you can, and before viewing any of the QuickTime Episodes.
In the meantime we have reluctantly switched to Windows Media as the default media format for the episodes. The episodes are still available in QuickTime and in Flash Video formats (through YouTube) under the “Other Viewing Options” heading on each episode’s page.
If anyone has any further insight into this QuickTime issue, please let us know.
